I was born in England’s oldest recorded town – Colchester in Essex, a fact I was unaware of at the time. The only daughter in a family of four children which may have had some long lasting repercussions. This has still to be decided. By the time I was in my early teens I had moved house six times and was now living in Bedfordshire. A fortuitous meeting at the local Grammar school I attended introduced me to a family where the mother and sons all practised Transcendental Meditation (TM) – quite an unusual thing in 1975.
Somehow I knew this was to be my future and talked my parents into letting me learn TM. I was so impressed with the results not just for myself but for my parents too that I decided to work for the TM organisation rather than to go to University to study law. An interesting discussion at home ensued. Having worked for the organisation for many years in an administrative role I eventually trained to become a TM teacher and taught in central London for several years.
A desire to put food on the table led me and my TM teacher husband to eventually set up a management consultancy which quickly grew into a multi national organisation. I found myself the Finance and HR director. These responsibilities taught me a lot about people, life and spreadsheets. Escaping this role in my early 40’s to embrace motherhood I have found this the most rewarding and challenging part of my life so far.
I now live in Buckinghamshire with my husband and son. I still practice TM forty years on from that fortuitous meeting at school and have just published my first book called, ‘Where is Emma Butler’s Life Plan?’ I am working on book number two and blogging regularly here at justjulias.com.
